Retracting awnings

Choosing the right awning can be a challenging task, but very much worth your while. It can either make or break your garden. Wether you’re sitting under it, walking passed it, or overlooking it from a window, because of its size, you will always be in your field of vision. So if the looks are not completely to your satisfaction, it will quite soon start to annoy you. Dragging down all the joy you had from your garden with it.

Retracting awnings and their ease of use

Images of the various parts of the retractable awningsAnother crucial element of your awning is its ease of use. If it’s a pain to set up or roll out, you will either never use it, or it will completely ruin your mood every time you use it. Which is a bit of a shame as it should have the complete oposite effect. For that reason your should always look for good solid high quality retracting awnings. Retracting awnings are the type of awnings you can ‘easily’ roll out when you need them. Easily is the important word here. Most likely you are looking at a slightly higher price range when shopping for a good quality retraction mechanism, but the extra investment pays off in enjoyment.

Two types of retracting awnings

There are two types of retracting awnings. The manually operated awnings that require a bit of muscle (especially the cheap ones) and the computerized awnings where a little machine does all the work for you. To enable you to make the right decision, it is good to know how both types of retracting awnings are operated.

Manually operated retracting awnings

An image of an manually operated retractable awningAlthough muscle was mentioned in relation to operating this type of retracting awnings, but the level of muscle power completely depends on the quality of the mechanism. Well engineered manual systems have seriously clever ways of using your efforts and hardly require any real muscle power. They are operated by a crank or a handle very much like the handle you see on the big patio table umbrellas. By simply rotating the handle the awning will either unrolled or retracted.

Automated retracting awnings

The remote control of a retractable awningThis is pure enjoyment. Simply press a button and the awning is rolled out or retracted. But there are quite a number of factors to take into account here. For startes, again, there are the discount models. They get the job done, but at their own pace and with a bit screaming from the motor. There are two main differences between the quality and the budget retracting awnings. The noise and the speed. In general the budget models will let your neighbors know that you’re getting ready it sit on your patio. And they will make you wait. Don’t be surprised to see yourself pressing that button for roughly a minute.

But there is another consideration to make. Where do you want your button? You could choose to have the button for activating the retraction mechanism places on the wall next to your patio door(s). But why not go for remote controlled retracting awnings? Just sit on your patio, reading your paper, sipping from a glass of wine and as the sun moves during the day, so does the awning over your patio. Without you ever leaving your comfortable chair. And the best part: in most cases it’s even cheaper than having the button constructed on the wall of your house. Have a look here for more information about patio awnings to cover your patio.
